83rd Lecture -The Fat Lady Sings: The Death and Rebirth of Western Opera
[第八十三講] 壓軸好戲:西方戲劇的衰亡與重生
Abstract

Over the last century Western opera houses have seen a steady decline in audience turnout; in the last thirty years, audiences have shrunk at an exponential rate; and in the last decade an increasing and alarming number of opera houses around the world have closed their doors and filed for bankruptcy. Yet, simultaneously, a quasi-grassroots movement has begun to blossom in which new micro-companies and other tradition-defying ensembles have emerged to fill the void being left by the larger, no-longer stalwart institutions. This trend is born of innovation and begs the question: has the public actually grown tired of opera or tired of the status quo?
